THORMAJOINT: THE PROVEN EXPANSION JOINT

 • THE PROBLEM

Bridge expansion joints are subject to water and salt penetration or mechanical failure which, if left untreated, puts structures and bearings at risk. Serious damage can follow quickly. Many jointing systems have been proposed and many have proved ineffective or prohibitively expensive. Some asphaltic binders are inflexible, and therefore brittle, at low temperatures, making joints liable to fail by cracking or debonding.

ThormaJoint is the original asphaltic plug bridge expansion joint. Since its introduction in the mid 70's, ThormaJoint has spawned many imitations but has never been matched. It is installed in over 35 countries on five continents.


A special combination of an elastomer modified BJ200 binder and carefully selected single size stone provide a strength and flexibility that can accommodate movements up to appr. 25 mm. Independent evidence shows that BJ Binder is flexible at temperatures as low as -20°C and resistant to flow up to 95°C. Based on more than 20 years' experience, there is no other bridge expansion joint that can beat ThormaJoint for effectiveness, economy and reliability.

Careful monitoring of early joints has proved that the system provides a long-term solution to bridge joint maintenance problems if installed correctly.
